In the last article I talked about how to upgrade to Ubuntu 18.10 19.04. In many cases, the update is better because you can save all your data, installed programs and settings. But the update does not always go well, especially if you have installed many programs and libraries from third-party PPA repositories. So a clean installation is always preferable.
Today we will talk about how to install Ubuntu 19.04 computer or laptop. As in previous articles of this kind are all to be dismantled step by step and in great detail. The article is intended for beginners, so experienced users will not be interesting.
Preparing to install
Step 1. Downloading the image
The first thing you need to download an installation image of Ubuntu from the official website. System requirements of the new version are the same as Ubuntu 18.04.
The download will start automatically after you click Download. On the download page there are two image Ubuntu 18.04.2 and 19.04. As we want the latest version, then we need a way 19.04.
Step 2. Writing the image to a USB flash drive
Recently, the standard for recording images on a flash drive in Linux was utility Etcher. Learn more about working with her and other utilities written in this article. Here I will only say that it is enough to choose an image, USB flash drive and press the Flush, then the utility will do everything itself:
In Windows, you can use the program Rufus. The procedure here is similar to and nothing complicated.
Step 3. BIOS setup
No matter what version of the BIOS used on your computer, whether old or modern UEFI BIOS you need to reboot the computer and press the Del key, F2 or F8 to enter the setup interface of the BIOS. Then you need to find the tab Boot. She could see the Settings or just in the main menu to the old BIOS. For example, in the BIOS from MSI it looks like this:
Here, in the Boot device priority you need to set your flash drive in the first place. Note that it must be connected to the computer. Then just exit the BIOS via the menu Exit button to save the settings. You can use both UEFI mode and normal. Ubuntu has excellent support for UEFI, a more detailed setting the system to UEFI read in this article.

Step 10. Disk layout
On the disk layout, you must stay in more detail. I wrote a separate article about the proper markings. Linux file system has a feature, compared to Windows. There are no disks, and all partitions are merged into one root file system. This allows you to place different directories on different physical disks or partitions. It is therefore recommended to make /home partition on a separate partition. Thus, if you need to reinstall, your files in the home directory will not be affected. For web servers, you can also make separate partitions for /var.
For home computer is the root and home partition. In this step of the installer you can let the system create the desired sections or to do it manually. We consider the manual method. To do this, select Another option.
Step 11. Create partition table
If you are installing on an empty drive, create the partition table. To do this, click on the appropriate button:
Then agree that all disk data will be erased. Create partition table just in case if the hard drive is empty.
Step 12. Creating the root partition
To create a first section click on Free space and click the button with the sign +:
The size of this partition preferably selected in the range of 20-50 GB. Minimum system requirements – 10 gigabytes, but if you know that you will install many programs, it is better to take more. File system is ext4 and the mount point is /. Then click OK.
Step 13. Creating home partition
This item is not required, but when installed on a home computer, not virtual machine, it is desirable to do so. Again select free space and click the Plus button. Partition size – all available space, file system is ext4 and the mount point is /home. If you decide not to create this section, respectively, then all the free space you want to allocate at the root.
Step 14. The end of the markup
The swap partition is not necessary to create now Ubuntu will use for these purposes the file which will be created automatically. When the markup is completed, click Install now:
And then confirm the action by clicking Continue.
Step 15. Time zone
Select your timezone:
Step 16. Create user

On the last screen you can select the programs you want to install in the new system:
Step 19. Ready
All the installation is complete and you can use your new operating system. Of course, you will have a lot to do. Need to install a browser, instant messengers and other software, such as LAMP server and development environment, if you are a developer. But the system is ready to work.
