What’s new in Elementary OS 5.1 Hera

This is a significant update Elementary OS includes many changes and improvements, including native support for Flatpak, faster application center, as well as a variety of thoughtful adaptation of user interface of the system.

A free update for existing users of Elementary OS, Hera also supports Linux Kernel 5.0 thanks to a recent update of Ubuntu LTS.

Read on to learn more about what’s new in Elementary OS release 5.1 and how to load it.

Elementary OS 5.1 Hera

Most of the changes proposed in the update Elementary OS 5.1, are partly new, because they are iteratively migrated by software upgrade to Juno 5.0 Elementary.

But in General, these updates enough to create a separate version with a new .iso images for download. Think of this as one of the point releases of Ubuntu.

Here are the main changes in Elementary OS 5.1:

  • A new experience when you first start
  • Support Flatpak
  • Redesigned Greeter (login screen in the system)
  • Improving accessibility for people with disabilities
  • Various improvements in the system settings
  • App updates
  • Improve the perception of keyboard shortcuts
  • A new Linux kernel

AppCenter (software tool for Elementary OS ), as they say, is downloaded 10 times faster than Hera, and Juno. It also offers built-in support for applications Flatpak.

Speaking about the support of Flatpak, the kit included new core utility called Sideload. She (as the name implies) is used to work with files .flatpakrefdownloaded from other repositories Flatpak such as Flathub.

Since Elementary OS 5.1 is based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, all third-party apps released for “Juno” was also there and working.

The settings panel of the system has been improved, reconfigured and/or expanded, including panel for Bluetooth, Sound and Display.

Special attention was paid to improvement of accessibility (e.g., support for visual and audible alerts, and you can’t ignore a touchpad while a mouse is connected).

Improve the perception of keyboard shortcuts is an important systemic change that is quite noticeable, in particular, due to the changed style of the uppercase letters in the applications menu.

Since Elementary OS is famous for its built-in applications, I am pleased to announce that version 5.1 provides a significant part of the improvements to them, for example, the Calendar (has a more flamboyant style of the labels of events), Camera (supports a large number of web-cameras) and Pictures (advanced dialog).

App Files supports CloudProviders API, which we wrote about in the blog in 2017 (which is used by multiple services), and the code Editor boasts the best integration with Git.

As someone who is obsessed with desktop Wallpaper more than health 😅 I was very happy that Elementary OS has added three new Wallpapers high quality.

Insights

Much time has passed since then, as I discovered using Elementary OS, and although this release is much in need of improvement, I’m not in much of a hurry, to take and study it.

It’s not that the distribution does not look very good, on the contrary, it looks great, but the fact that the approach the developers of Elementary OS (“use it how we create it”) does not coincide with the way I use Linux control system.

But I don’t everything, and there are many people who like the tightly integrated approach and user interface of the system. For them, this update is very important.
