Parlatype is a minimalistic C++ / GTK graphical audio player for manual speech transcription.
Transcription (in linguistics) – method of written transmission of elements of sounding speech (phonemes, allophones, sounds, etc), a particular set of written characters (phonetic alphabet). In practice, linguistic transcription has a variety of applications.
The Parlatype user interface is designed in accordance with the Gnome 3 concept (placing application controls on the window title). support for most existing audio formats is provided by Gstreamer (multimedia framework, the core of multimedia applications). The main purpose of the app is to help transcribe speech by journalists, students, scientists, and anyone else who needs to transcribe audio recordings.
The main Parlatype workspace is occupied by a simple spectrogram / sonogram (images showing the dependence of the spectral density and signal power on time), which clearly displays the open audio file. During playback, the spectrogram is automatically scrolled so that the current position is always visible. It supports manual scrolling, fast forward/backward navigation, and switching to the desired time interval.
Parlatype allows you to change the playback speed (0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2), files can be added from the menu or by dragging (Drag-and-drop function / Drag and drop), can be used with word processors (for example, LibreOffice, using the Parlatype LibreOffice Extension) and other applications that support “Voice typing“.
