Install VMware Tools Ubuntu 18.04

Guest additions provide a virtual machine additional benefits and features such as the ability to dynamically adjust the screen resolution of the guest machine to the window size, the ability to create shared folders, shared clipboard, and a better integration of the main and the virtual operating system. For VMware virtual machines, like VirtualBox exist for such additions.

In this article we will discuss how to install VMware tools on Ubuntu 18.04 from the official repositories of the distribution or through the program.

Installing VMware Tools in Ubuntu 18.04

The first and the easiest way to install the guest OS, it can perform an unattended installation of the distribution. After starting the installation the program will prompt you to install add-ons:

If you agree, add-ons will be downloaded and installed automatically after the main installation process:

The second method is a little more complicated. In an installed system you can open the menu Virtual Machine and select Install/Reinstall VMware tools:

Then click Install:

After clicking on this button your system will be connected the image with the files add-ons. You need to copy the files VMwareTools-10.1.2….tar.gz in your home folder.

Then unzip this file, look for the file vmware-tools-distrib/ and run it:

sudo perl vmware-tools-distrib/

Open terminal in the folder from Nautilus context menu, selecting Open terminal.

Also install WMvare tools available from the official repositories. For this there are packages open-vm-tools-desktop and open-vm-tools:

For version virtual machine with graphical interface, run:

sudo apt install open-vm-tools-desktop

A version without GUI:

sudo apt install open-vm-tools
