Install Plex on Ubuntu 18.04

Plex is a free media server with open source code that can be used to store and playback all your videos, movies, shows, and other media resources in one place. Plex allows you to stream your library to any device, e.g. Smart TV, Xbox, PlayStation, Apple TV, as well as in a normal browser.

Install Plex on Ubuntu 18.04

The program is not in the official Ubuntu repositories, so you need to add a third party repository from the developer. First, install curl and add the key of this repository:

sudo apt install curl
curl https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-keys/PlexSign.key | sudo apt-key add -

Then add the repository and update the package lists:

echo deb https://downloads.plex.tv/repo/deb public main | tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/plex.list

sudo apt update

To install plex on ubuntu run the command:

sudo apt install plexmediaserver

After installation is complete, verify that the service has started successfully with the command:

systemctl status plexmediaserver

Configuring Plex Media Server on Ubuntu

First, let’s create the directory which will store our media library. We will store media files in the directory /opt/plexmedia, but you can choose another way:

sudo mkdir -p /opt/plexmedia/movies

sudo mkdir /opt/plexmedia/video

sudo mkdir /opt/plexmedia/music

Don’t forget to give all these directories user rights for plex:

sudo chown-R plex:plex /opt/plexmedia

The media server is not the usual GUI, but there is a convenient web interface, with which you can connect to it remotely. To access the web interface open a browser and type there the URL of the form:

http://адрес_сервера:32400/web/

If you installed Plex on your local machine, use the localhost address:

http://localhost:32400/web/

In the first step of setting Plex will prompt you to log in to the interface using your Google account, Facebook or e-mail addresses. Select one of the ways:

Then settings. First you need to enter the computer name and choose whether to allow connections to the server not only from the local network:

In the next step we need to add the directory from which the program will take the media files to display. Each library must be added separately. You can add folders with TV series, movies, photos, or just video.

From the next page, select the type of library and type its name:

Then select the path to the previously created folder:

When a folder is selected, click the large button to Add a library:

Similarly, you can add multiple libraries:

In the last step, the web interface offers us to download the Android app, which you can use to access the data.

After you add files to a previously configured folder, your video will appear in the program interface:

You can start playing just by clicking on the media file. You can also open the video full screen by click on it on the bar, play:

To collapse back, click on the arrow down in the upper left corner.
