MATE (Mate Desktop Environment) — full-featured graphical desktop environment based on the Toolkit GTK. The project started as a modification (fork) desktop environment Gnome2, in connection with the release of GNOME3 which implements fundamentally different from traditional user interface (rendered uncomfortable for many).
