Now the system can be booted in Live mode from the installation media, and also in this Live mode adds the ability to install with the installer Calamares.

The usual menu-based and graphical Debian installer is still here and available for selection at boot, and Calamares were added for the convenience of newcomers. In this article we will discuss how to perform step-by-step 10 installing Debian using the new installer Calamares.

System requirements

Minimum system requirements 10 Debian graphical installer are:

Preparing to install

Step 1. Download the installation image

Debian there are several types of installation images. This is a Netinstall image that contains only the most essential components that complete images containing almost everything, as well as Live images, which you can use to start the system without installation.

To download the full image, open the page repository and download the first disc. Full images contain a huge set of Debian packages needed to install on systems with bad available to the Internet. There are three images, but to install you will need only the first. I wrote about installing from the full image in the article installing Debian 9 since there is almost nothing has changed.

In this article, we will perform the installation from a Live image. For download open this page and select the image with the right environment. I’ll use Gnome.

Step 2. Writing the image to a USB flash drive

To write the image to a USB flash drive you can use the utility Etcher, both in Windows and in Linux, you can simply choose image, then choose USB device and click the Flush:

Step 3. BIOS setup

The next step is to configure the BIOS, you must restart the computer and press Del, Shift+F2, F2 or F8 to enter the setup interface of the BIOS. Here, find the tab Boot. In section Bood Device Priority you need to choose Hard Diskand Hard Disk Priority is to install first your USB flash drive:

It works in a similar way as in the new BIOS and the old but new everything is much easier. Debian installs fine on UEFI, so no additional configuration is needed.

The last time the file loader started to take a lot of space, so reserve under this section is to provide at least 1024 MB. File system is ext4. Then select mount point /boot.

Step 12. Root partition

Similarly we need to create the root partition. Mount point – / file system – ext4, and the size of at least 10 GB, but better 30-50 GB so just enough for all the system files:

Step 13. The swap partition

The swap partition should be the same as the RAM size if you want to use hibernation or if you don’t want, then at least half of RAM and at least four gigabytes. Here the file system needs to choose linuxswap:

Step 14. Home section

Here you will store your files, documents, videos and music, take as long as necessary, usually all the available space. File system – ext4, the mount point is /home:
