Installing AMD driver on Ubuntu

One of the urgent problems in Linux is setup correctly and maximally productive performance. In this article we will discuss how to install AMD driver in Ubuntu for example, AMD and Sapphire RX480 with 8 GB of memory.

In the article we will install the driver, learn how to check its presence in the system and compare the performance of different implementations of the drivers in the Ubuntu operating system.

For graphics cards of this manufacturer there are three actual video driver:

  • Mesa is a free software for graphics cards from different manufacturers, which implements the OpenGL API and Vulcan. Is the default in most Linux operating systems.
  • AMDGPU-PRO – proprietary driver from the company AMD. Include AMDGPU driver and various additional modules with closed source code.
  • AMDGPU driver for graphics cards from the company AMD and open source.

Before proceeding to driver installation let’s check the performance of the video card driver to see whether you need to install this driver.

Performance test system

First of all, rate the performance of the system without the driver. For performance testing we will use the test Unigine Heaven. This package can be downloaded here. After the package is installed, run it and install the required us testing set-up. In my case it was the following settings:

  • API: OpenGL;
  • Quality: Ultra;
  • Tessellation: Extreme;
  • Stereo 3D: Disabled;
  • Matrix: Off;
  • AA: x8;
  • Full screen: Yes;
  • Resolution: 1920×1080.

Run the test Suite. Select the menu option Benchmark and wait for results. In the end, I received the following information.

Next, look at how to install amdgpu pro in ubuntu 18.04.

Installing AMD driver on Ubuntu

Now we can install AMD driver (PRO or open version).

Step 1. Search old version

To check whether we already have this implementation of the driver, execute the command

dpkg-l amdgpu-pro

If the driver is not detected, it is necessary to install them.

Step 2. Driver download

Go to the driver download page Radeon the link. Choose our model of the graphics card. Click Submit.

Select the operating system version, driver version and click Download.

Go to the folder Downloading, watch the name of the package and extract the package archive into this directory using the tar command:

tar-Jxvf amdgpu-pro-19.50-967956-ubuntu 18.04.tar.xz

Go to the folder with the unpacked drivers with the command:

cd amdgpo-pro-19.50-967956-ubuntu 18.04

Step 3. Driver installation

The AMDGPU driver installation in Ubuntu open version is executed with the command:

sudo ./amdgpu-install

To install the driver with the proprietary modules, run the command:

sudo ./amdgpu-pro-install

Wait until the proprietary drivers amd ubuntu 18.04 installs. When performing the installation process is to be patient and wait until the installation is completed. Then the current user is added to group video with command

sudo usermod -a-G video $LOGNAME

Step 5. Check that the installation is correct

After that restart the system and check the – have the driver we system. This can be done by several methods.

sudo dpkg-l amdgpu-pro

lspci-k | grep -EA2 “VGA|3D|Display”

sudo lshw

Squander the result of the command to partition *-display and look at the parameters.

To verify the performance of the new driver

Now we can re-test the performance of our computer with the benchmark Unigine Heaven. The parameters of the benchmark was left unchanged. The result was higher than with the default drivers by 10.78%. It should be noted that the difference between the minimum and maximum FPS also increased significantly.

Remove drivers AMD

To remove the AMDGPU driver Ubuntu you should run the same script that you used during the installation only with option –uninstall. For example:

sudo ./amdgpu-install --uninstall

Or:

sudo ./amdgpu-pro-install --uninstall

Insights

Today we dealt with one important question about drivers for AMD cards – is it worth it to replace them with a version from the manufacturer? And I have to answer that Yes, it is. The performance increase is 10 percent, which I think will be useful in work tasks, and games.

We also found out what version of drivers for video cards by this manufacturer exist, they sorted out their installation, removal and checking their existence in Ubuntu 18.04.
