How to use qBittorrent

qBittorrent is one of the most popular free clients of the BitTorrent network. It has basic functionality, but it is not devoid of interesting features. Despite its nondescript appearance, it is superior to other torrent clients in some aspects.

In this article, we will look at how to use qBittorrent. We will talk not only about such banal things as downloading and distributing torrents, but also about automating and managing the torrent database.

Installing qBittorrent

Installing qBittorrent is quite simple. If you are using a Debian-based distribution or Ubuntu with the APT package manager, just run this command in the terminal:

sudo apt install qbittorrent

When using lightweight distributions, you may need to add a repository. In this case, run this command and try again:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:qbittorrent-team/qbittorrent-stable

For distributions with an RPM package manager, such as Fedora, use the command:

dnf install qbittorrent

For Arch Linux with its package manager, the command will look like this:

sudo pacman -Sy qbittorrent

Among other things, you can install qBittorrent via the Snap package:

sudo snap install qbittorrent-arnatious

How to use qBittorrent

1. Interface

The interface of qBittorrent is intuitive. The toolbar contains only basic controls, such as adding a magnet link, opening a torrent file, and interacting with the selected torrent.

Also, some of the buttons are placed in the status bar. You can set the total download speed and return of torrents. “Speedometer” allows you to switch to a special speed mode.

The main part is divided into two blocks: navigation and a list of torrents with detailed information about the selected torrent. Of the tabs with the description, we are only interested in two: Shared and Files. In the first tab, in the comment field, you can view the link to the web page, if there is one. And through files, you can open files directly, without having to run a file manager. You can also skip downloading unnecessary files there.

2. Setting up the folder

The default folder for saving files is selected in the settings in the Downloads tab. But when adding new torrents, you can choose a different folder, including from the history of the last used ones, and even remember the last used folder.

Also in this section of the settings there is an itemAutomatically add from. Torrent files from the monitoring folders will be automatically transferred to the working folder of the program and placed for download in the default folder or the one you set. The main disadvantage of this feature is that you actually lose access to the downloaded torrent file. In addition, all files will be downloaded automatically, which is not always required. Next, let’s look at how to configure the speed of qbittorrent.

3. Setting the download speed

The download speed is configurable.Speed. It is better to leave the general speed limits unchanged. And special restrictions can be configured so that downloading torrents does not interfere with the use of other Internet resources.

The opposite situation may also occur, when the mobile operator removes the restriction on traffic consumption only at night, then it makes sense to swap the speeds and schedule the inclusion of a special mode.

To remove the speed limit, select 0. You can not completely remove the recoil, but you can limit it to 1 KB/s. This completes the qbittorrent setup.

4. Download a torrent file

When opening torrent files, a window appears with a choice of download options. You can choose not only a folder to download, but also a category. Categories are useful for navigation, but unfortunately, a single torrent can only have one category.

Also pay attention to the item Load sequentially. With it, it is much easier to download multi-part movies, because the first series will be downloaded first.

It is worth recalling that some browsers have started blocking file downloads without notification. Therefore, some links to torrent files can only be downloaded through the context menu by selectingSave as.

5. Loading the magnet link

Loading magnet links is similar to downloading torrent files, with the only difference that the list of files is loaded not from a local file, but from the Internet. And someone must be on the hand, otherwise the list will not load.

To add multiple magnet links, you can use the first button in the control panel. If the automatic torrent management mode is selected in the Downloads tab in the settings, then all torrents will start downloading to the default folder.

qBittorrent also allows you to download magnet links via RSS. The function is enabled in the corresponding settings section. There is also the possibility of flexible filter settings. To add RSS addresses enable the display of the RSS tab (ViewRSS Manager).

6. Download Management

You can manage the download through the control panel, but through it you can only pause the torrent or delete it. More options are available in the context menu. You can use it to add torrent trackers or select a category and tags. You can also configure the qbittorrent speed for a specific torrent.

We have already found out that a single torrent can have only one category. But there can be as many tags as you want. For example, you can put a rock band album in the music category, and label the genre, band, and year of release of the album.

The file preview just starts the selected file. A preview request does not increase the priority of the file, so you can only view partially downloaded files.

Also, in the files tab, you can manage each file individually. For example, you can increase the priority or not download the selected file at all.

7. Distribution of torrents

The distribution of torrents is configured in the BitTorrent section. Here you can select the number of active torrents, as well as configure the behavior of torrents. If you set a limit on achieving a 0 distribution rating, then you will actually only download, but not distribute files. In the same section, you can disable the search for sids in the DHT network.

8. Search for torrents

It is impossible not to mention the built-in torrent search engine. By default, only a few torrent trackers are available, but you can add more plugins from the official site.

9. Creating torrents

You can create a torrent via the menuTools or using the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+N. If you create a private torrent, then make sure that the address of the tracker is specified, otherwise no one will be able to download your files. The torrent must have at least one tracker. In general, this is DHT.

10. Web interface

The web interface is enabled in the settings in the tab of the same name. In addition to the standard settings, such as the IP address and login / password, it is possible to change the interface. We will only talk about the standard interface, since the rest are functionally almost identical to it.

At first glance, the interface almost repeats the desktop version, but on closer inspection, you can notice several simplifications. For example, when adding a torrent file, there is no list of files, you can remove the excess after the download starts in the Files tab.

Among the simplifications, it is also worth noting the lack of speed monitoring, although it is present in some alternative shells. There are also some minor problems with the layout of the search engine. But in general, the interface is quite usable.

In this article, we looked at how to use qBittorrent for dummies. Now you know that qBittorrent allows you not only to download torrent files, but also to catalog them by categories and tags, as well as to start downloading automatically from torrent files and RSS feeds.

Also, an important feature is the timer speed control, which will allow you to optimize the download at limited rates. The web interface allows you to use the client on the server, and you can choose one of several shells. And what non-standard qBittorrent features do you use? Tell us about it in the comments.
